Welcome to The Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre Biography

During a long and illustrious career Sheridan Morley wrote more than 30 books, including major biographies of Noel Coward, John Gielgud, his father Robert Morley, and his grandmother Gladys Cooper. To continue his legacy in the forefront of this field of literary endeavour and to celebrate the art of theatrical biography, The Sheridan Morley Prize is awarded annually for the best biography, autobiography or diary of a theatrical, artistic, or show-business subject published in the English language in the preceding calendar year.

The 5th annual Prize will be presented on March 8th, at the Garrick Club in London’s Covent Garden. Last year’s Prize was won by My Life in Pieces by Simon Callow. This year the Jury includes Last Year's Book Prize Winner Simon Callow,Theatre Critic Georgina Brown and Dramatist and Screenwriter Martin Sherman, and is chaired by the critic, broadcaster and biographer Ruth Leon.

The prize is supported by the Garrick Club of which Sheridan was a lifelong member and by contributions from Sheridan’s friends and colleagues.

The Prize is administered by Oberon Books on behalf of the Trustees – Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson, Michael Arditti, Ruth Leon - and a diverse range of more than 30 books have been submitted by their authors and publishers.
